  • Auction Lot Conditions Explained: New, Open-Box, Box-Damaged & More

Quick answer: Liquidation lots come in a range of conditions. At Kilford Auctions the condition is always listed FIRST in each lot’s description. Common labels include new-in-box, open-box, box-damaged, customer return, salvage, and not tested. Reading the condition before you bid is the single best way to shop smart.

What do the condition labels mean?

New-in-box is unused in original packaging. Open-box was opened but is otherwise like new. Box-damaged means the product is fine but the packaging has wear. Customer return came back to a retailer and was re-inspected. Salvage may be incomplete or for parts. Not tested means we couldn’t verify function.

    Why is packaging sometimes worn?

Overstock and returns pass through warehouses, so boxes may show shelf wear, stickers, or have been opened for inspection and resealed. The item inside is usually unaffected. We add photos when damage is significant.

Should I avoid ‘not tested’ lots?

Not necessarily, but bid accordingly. Not-tested and salvage lots are sold as-is with no returns, so they’re best for buyers comfortable with that risk, or who can use parts. Preview or ask questions first.

  • What Is a Buyer’s Premium at an Auction?

Quick answer: A buyer’s premium is a percentage added to your winning bid that goes to the auction house. At Kilford Auctions it’s 14%. So a $100 winning bid means $114 plus applicable sales tax. It’s standard across the auction industry and helps cover the cost of sourcing, inspecting, photographing, and processing every lot.

How is the buyer’s premium calculated?

It’s a flat percentage of your final winning bid. Win a lot for $50 and the 14% premium adds $7, for $57 before tax. The premium is shown in every auction’s terms before you bid.

Is the buyer’s premium worth it?

Almost always, yes. Because lots start at $5 with no reserve, winning bids are typically far below retail. Even with the premium and tax added, buyers routinely pay a fraction of what an item costs new.

  • How to Bid in an Online Auction: A Beginner’s Guide

Quick answer: To bid in an online auction, register for a free account, browse the open lots, and place a bid (or set a max bid) on anything you want. The highest bid when the lot closes wins. At Kilford Auctions every lot starts at $5 with no reserve, so you can win brand-name items for a fraction of retail.

How do I place my first bid?

Create a free bidder account, add a payment method, then open any lot and enter your bid. You can bid the next increment manually, or set a maximum bid and let the system bid for you up to that amount. You are only charged if you win.

What is a maximum (proxy) bid?

A maximum bid is the most you’re willing to pay. The system bids on your behalf in small increments, only as high as needed to keep you in the lead, up to your max. It’s the easiest way to win without watching every lot.

    What happens after I win?

When the auction closes, winners receive an invoice by email (including a 14% buyer’s premium and sales tax). You then arrange local pickup or shipping. It’s that simple.
